HISTORY

In 2001, ten dedicated volunteers formed the Read “Write” Adult Literacy Program.  Since its inception, the program has assisted close to 500 adults in learning to read or speak English in Torrance County and its adjacent communities.

From the organization’s modest beginnings, Read “Write” has continued to be a consistent resource for hundreds of Torrance County adults who want to improve their reading skills.  In addition, non English speakers can now learn to speak and read English through our one-on- one tutoring program. The organization is an example of how the vision and energy of a few people can make a significant impact on the quality of life of individuals, families and the community.

Today, Read “Write” operates from conveniently located offices in Moriarty, as well as churches, libraries, and senior centers in outlying areas such as Tijeras, Estancia, Mountainair and Edgewood.  With almost 1,400 square feet of space, RWALP has staff offices, a modest resource library, a computer lab, bookstore and tutoring spaces.  The organization continues to meet the needs of learners by using highly motivated volunteer tutors who give thousands of hours each year and as always, all services are offered free-of-charge.
