WHO WE ARE

OVERVIEW

Read “Write” Adult Literacy Program (RWALP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to help adults increase their reading, writing, and speaking skills by offering adult literacy programs and related educational services in Torrance County, New Mexico, and adjacent communities.

RWALP was started in 2001 to provide one-on-one tutoring for adults in the Moriarty and Torrance County area.  Over the last 14 years the organization has recruited and trained hundreds of community volunteers who have taught nearly 700 adults to read and/or speak English.

Tutors are paired with students who meet together for at least two hours per week. Sessions are held at the Read “Write” Adult Literacy offices in Moriarty as well as other libraries in Torrance County, including communities such as Estancia, Mountainair, Willard, Edgewood, or Tijeras.  Instruction is tailored to the literacy skills and learning objectives of each student.  Tutors work with students on practical applications of their new skills so that students can begin to see the benefits of their efforts.

All services are offered free-of-charge.  The program depends on the efforts of volunteers who give thousands of hours each year and on the financial support of individuals and organizations who realize the importance of addressing the tough issues of illiteracy.

RWALP is a member of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy, an affiliate of ProLiteracy America and a designated agency of United Way of Central New Mexico.
